Halloween is coming, and with all the festivities, there’s one thing I really dread about Halloween – the candy! I’m hippy(ish) myself, and now that I have 2 little boys, they also get to be hippy(ish).

That means we drink our green smoothies for breakfast and try to eat as many whole foods as possible, use our natural products around the house and try to lower our carbon footprint. We also do our best to keep the candy intake pretty low in our house.

A few years ago, I didn’t even let my oldest (now 4) eat sugar until he was almost 2. I’ve “progressed” from how I used to be, and I don’t freak out when my kids get a sucker at the barber anymore, but when it comes to the candy part of Halloween, I still don’t look forward to that.

I know it’s only one day, and it’s not going to make any lasting damage on my kids as they binge on candy for a day – it’s more that my kids will be cranky and wired and begging for it all day – and for the next week or more until I’ve thrown most of it in the garbage.

But in hopes of avoiding the candy craze,  I’m going to try the “candy fairy” idea this year.

You’ve probably heard of it – similar to the Tooth Fairy, but with candy instead of teeth. So, your kid puts his candy by his bed before he goes to sleep, and when he wakes up in the morning, the candy’s gone and a toy or money is there in place of the candy.

I’m not sure how it will go over with my 4-year-old, but I’ve heard good things from friends who’ve employed the Candy Fairy.

So tonight I’m going to rest easier as I think about Halloween. I’ll close my eyes and dream about the fun of the holiday – the trick-or-treating, crunching through the fall leaves, our traditional “dinner-in-a-pumpkin” (it’s literal, btw, we eat dinner out of a cooked pumpkin!) and my cute Littles dressed up in furry animal costumes – with my hope that the Candy Fairy is going to work – and gives us all a much happier (and slightly healthier) Halloween experience. Wishing you a Happy Halloween, too!

Oh, and btw, if you’re looking for a healthy (and delectable!) chocolate treat for Halloween, check out this popular post. Enjoy!
